In response to these conditions, Ulman conceived of Excellences and Perfections as a “boycott” of her own online persona. For three months, she allowed her profiles to be exactly what social media seems to demand—that she be a “Fat Bastard.” As a result, she garnered the support of other women who had endured similar makeovers or procedures. She earned criticism for seeming to promote retrograde physical ideals, she was the target of cheap flattery, vulgar propositions, and abusive comments. Her close friends were often confused, unable to demarcate the Ulman of social media as a separate fiction, even when she would try to explain the project away from the keyboard. By repeating a lie for three months, she created a truth that she was unable to dismantle.

On September 14, 2014, Ulman posted a black-and-white photograph of a soiled XXL fundoshi, the kind of banal image one might find in a frame purchased at a “tasteful” department store. The caption read, “THE END-EXCELLENCES AND PERFECTIONS.” It received 129 likes.

Who are you especially keen on?
These days, Charles Mayton, who is a painter showing at David Lewis Gallery. He makes conceptually rigorous abstract paintings. Carissa Rodriguez, who showed in our project space recently. Michael E. Smith is a really interesting sculptor who works with organic materials in a profound way. And Sam Pulitzer and Mathieu Malouf are artists I’m very interested in.

Where do you think contemporary art is going?
I think that we are coming out of the obsession with abstraction and moving back towards a more conceptual type of art. That is not to say that the art of the future is going to ignore the visual. I think the aesthetic is probably going to get more and more difficult to digest, because that is where art needs to go. But this aesthetic will age very well, although it might not immediately be defined as a pleasurable experience.

Catherine Taft: It seems very clear that the catalog’s language adopts the language of its own production. Surprisingly, some reviews of the first installment of “The Production Line of Happiness” alluded to a spirit of obfuscation in the show—for example, the wall labels being dislocated from their work—which prompts me to ask if there is a degree of illegibility operating in your work, either intentionally or not?
Christoper Williams: Illegibility? No, I am actually not interested in that idea at all, although the idea of disarticulation and methodologies of separation are of great interest to me. With regard to the book, I can’t imagine one that is clearer about its economic and material realities.
The history of photography as art in the 20th century is the history of the illustrated press or the photo book, and no one stands as a better example of this than Walker Evans, who embraced the roles of photographer, editor, graphic designer, typographer, and copy writer. In his books, but especially his magazine work, no one element took dominance over the others. In fact, he used each element as a device to open up rather than reduce the possibilities of the entire network. Evans possessed an acute sense of context and many times used his position within a publication to criticize the ideology of its support structure. Making the jump to the context of exhibition and gallery display, it’s of course easy to think of the photographic practitioner extending their role to that of the curator, exhibition designer, etc.
Two things should be noted: Evans was criticized for the physical distance between his photographs and his texts, and it is well known that he locked himself in the Museum of Modern Art to arrange his own pictures, sometimes wheat pasting them to the walls so that they could not be moved.

DAVID JOSELIT -- AGAINST REPRESENTATION

“Untilled” resisted its own smooth functioning, producing a theater of meaning’s ruin; its collapse into compost.

In her view, the icon, like Huyghe’s “Untilled”, instantiates a kind of ecology. The icon restages this becoming-image belatedly for the worshipper, which is why Mondzain can declare, “the icon is nothing other than the economy of the image.” [4]

This economy is what Huyghe calls a situation.

As I have already stated, such an operation occurs whenever one looks at an artwork or any visual artifact, but Huyghe’s work assertively resists synthesis, whereas a Raphael Madonna or a Byzantine icon, or for that matter an appropriated photograph by Richard Prince or Sherrie Levine, makes sophisticated use of mimesis in order to guide the viewer toward a stable representation.

To speculate on image economies in this way is also to interrupt commercial business as usual, which does everything in its power to cause the production of images – say your impression of a laundry detergent – to correspond closely to the material advertisements scripted to sell that product. In short, the ideology of the medium is the ideology of the market (which is why, after all, modernist painting sells so well in galleries and auction houses).

The Occupy movement was criticized precisely for its refusal to represent – a program, a constituency, or a party. But such refusal brings into being an entire image economy where what Nancy calls disputation can surge into visibility and recalibrate what counts as politics in art.

Lauren Boyle: For us, alternative culture doesn’t have a lot of relevance. Everything is consumed by commercialism right away now, especially with the internet. It’s funny because I’m not that young – when I was in high school there was definitely an alternative culture, like indie or whatever. But now it’s like Bling Ring is cool and Spring Breakers is cool. And it’s funny.
The show, curated by Harry Burke, Elisa R. Linn, and Lennart Wolff, succinctly captured the gesture toward commodity and threw us into a space where a criticality into the particulars of the movement beyond that gesture can be explored.
